About the Host
I’m Crystal Marie, a lifelong story enthusiast.
Growing up, many of the Black stories I learned were depressing, incomplete or sparse. The stories elevated a select few to hero status without detailing the nuances of these everyday people like me and you who built this country. I learned that Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. said “I have a dream” but I didn’t learn that he also said “What does it profit a man to be able to eat at an integrated lunch counter if he doesn't earn enough money to buy a hamburger and a cup of coffee?”
At Howard University, I began to learn the beauty and complexity of Black stories and I haven’t stopped since. I continue to educate myself through books, podcasts, even music. Send me your recommendations!
I tell stories for a living through corporate marketing work, freelance writing, and now via this podcast.
I also get to raise three of the funniest kiddos who keep me entertained with their stories every day.
